Before calling California home, Dr. Chen had the opportunity to live in many parts of the country. He grew up in Houston, Texas and completed his undergraduate and medical school training at Northwestern University in Chicago. During his medical school education he was drawn to psychiatry as he felt that it was a specialty that truly helped him know his patients and understand the many factors that affected their lives. He entered a general psychiatry residency at Emory University in Atlanta, and his experiences there led him to pursue a child and adolescent fellowship.
Dr. Chen made a move up to the Pacific Northwest to complete his child and adolescent psychiatry training at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital. He had the opportunity to work in various treatment environments, including inpatient, residential and forensic settings, but he was especially drawn to outpatient work as it allowed him to form ongoing therapeutic relationships with kids and their families. Dr. Chen spent the final year of his fellowship as chief resident of the Seattle Children's psychiatry clinic and focused on developing skills in individual therapy, group therapy, parent training and pharmacological management.
Some of his most rewarding work has involved treating under-served minority populations at the Asian Counseling and Referral Service in Seattle, co-leading an outpatient group for children struggling with anxiety and providing psychiatric services for a local Medi-Cal clinic. With the goal of providing more personalized care for his patients and their families, Dr. Chen created his private practice.
Dr. Chen enjoys working with kids of all ages, and he is also experienced in treating college-aged individuals and adults. Some of his areas of expertise include Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, OCD and Bipolar. He also works with individuals looking to maximize social, academic and life skills. His treatment methods include both therapy and pharmacological management, and he strives to involve families during the process to optimize results and create collaborative relationships. He is Board Certified in both General Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry.
In his leisure time, Dr. Chen enjoys spending time with his wife, 2 sons and dog. His personal interests include sports, cooking, traveling and the outdoors.
